Midnight roadmap: BABE starts in Q4 2026, and SPO block production and NIGHT staking in Q1 2027

Midnight's account on X announced on 13 October at 17:39 Central European time that the roadmap is live. The post in the sample had about 533 likes and 24,194 views. SongMarketCap's deep-read from 14 October at 10:33 summarises seven areas without exact dates inside the quarters. Mainnet has been federated since March 2026; since September Compact contracts go without a prior security review, according to the same piece.

The working price of NIGHT at 14:14 is 0.1885 ADA, about $0.0442: SongMarketCap 0.188531 ADA / $0.044215, DexHunter 0.189212 ADA, GeckoTerminal 0.189582 ADA / $0.044750. Against yesterday that is about 2.1 percent lower in the ADA pair. Market value does not match: SongMarketCap closer to $690 million, GeckoTerminal closer to $743 million. I am not using CoinGecko's ticker under the name midnight here.

BABE, SPOs and staking

In Q4 2026 the phased Aura→BABE migration begins with a coordinated hard fork; mainnet activation stands in Q1 2027. By the end of 2026 block producers need rewards in the network token. Q1 2027 opens block production to Cardano SPOs and NIGHT delegation to a stake pool. Rewards and the minimum are not stated. In the same quarter the roadmap puts viewing keys, ledger compliance (freeze, forced transfer), VRF nullifiers and an RWA standard.

Alongside BABE, Q4 carries audited bank deposit tokens, shielded tokens, ed25519/ECDSA P-256 for HSMs and passkeys, private lending and swaps, and the finalisation of the Starstream UTXO privacy model. Peter Bui (Moshi/Hokan) on SongMarketCap announces Midnight privacy for escrow, with a target by the end of 2026.

hix_coffeepool reads Q1 2027 as “decentralisation moved a little backwards”. ItsDave_ADA minted Midnight testnet blocks. adastackio gives a neutral-positive summary. CardanoG1 is critical — the federated model should already have been retired. angrycryptoshow follows the OKCoin Japan listing without a claim of a lasting price pop; adaplusplus writes that there was no lasting pop.
